Environmental Air Permitting Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Air Permitting Engineer to join our growing environmental consulting team in Atlanta, Georgia. This position is designed for an environmental professional who has developed strong hands-on technical expertise and is ready to take the next step toward increased project, client, and team leadership responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will have approximately 8–12 years of environmental experience, preferably within consulting, with a strong emphasis on air permitting and regulatory compliance.
This is not a purely managerial position. The successful candidate will remain actively involved in technical project work, including emissions calculations, permit applications, regulatory evaluations, compliance documentation, and other environmental deliverables. At the same time, the position provides an opportunity to exercise greater independent judgment, contribute to project strategy and decision-making, interact directly with clients, and gradually assume additional review, mentoring, and project oversight responsibilities.
For someone who has developed strong technical capabilities but has not yet been given the opportunity to move into broader leadership, this position offers a clear path for professional growth.
Role and Responsibilities
-
Prepare and support air permit applications, emissions inventories, emissions calculations, regulatory applicability determinations, and related environmental compliance documentation.
-
Manage and execute projects involving Title V, PSD, NESHAP, and other federal, state, and local air quality regulations.
-
Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports, compliance reports, environmental plans, permit applications, and regulatory submissions.
-
Evaluate environmental compliance requirements and develop practical strategies to help clients meet regulatory obligations efficiently and effectively.
-
Apply independent judgment to project planning, technical evaluations, regulatory interpretations, and problem-solving.
-
Manage assigned projects and deliverables, including project scope, schedules, priorities, and client expectations.
-
Develop strong working relationships with clients and progressively take greater responsibility for direct client communication and project coordination.
-
Coordinate with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders as required.
-
Provide technical review and QA/QC of work products as experience with the firm's clients, processes, and technical standards develops.
-
Support and mentor less-experienced engineers and environmental professionals, providing technical guidance, feedback, and coaching.
-
Contribute to environmental projects involving air quality, water quality, waste management, and related compliance matters, with air permitting remaining a primary focus.
-
Stay current with changing environmental regulations and help clients understand the potential operational and compliance implications.
-
Utilize spreadsheets, environmental software, digital tools, and project-management systems to improve the quality and efficiency of project execution.
-
As technical and client knowledge develops, assume increasing responsibility for project oversight, staff development, client management, and strategic decision-making.
Career Growth Opportunity
This position is intended for an experienced environmental professional who is approaching the transition from primarily technical execution into broader project and team leadership.
Initially, the individual should expect to remain hands-on with the technical work while learning the firm's clients, industries, procedures, tools, and technical standards. Over time, the successful individual may take on greater responsibility for:
-
Client relationship management and independent client interaction
-
Project strategy and technical decision-making
-
Technical review and QA/QC
-
Oversight and delegation of project work
-
Coaching and mentoring junior staff
-
Project and team leadership
-
Broader senior-level responsibilities
The organization offers an environment where strong performers can take on increased responsibility relatively quickly based on demonstrated capability rather than organizational hierarchy or tenure.

The Opportunity
This role provides an opportunity to join an environmental consulting organization where experienced professionals can have a meaningful impact. Rather than moving into a position focused exclusively on managing others, this individual will continue developing deep technical expertise while progressively gaining greater responsibility for clients, projects, technical review, and staff development.
The ideal candidate is someone who still enjoys doing the technical work but is ready for more: more autonomy, more client exposure, more strategic involvement, and an opportunity to develop into a broader technical and organizational leader.
